Joe Hannon and our Military Outreach Program at GSC

The introduction of the Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008 (Post 9/11 GI Bill) resulted in the enrollment of a large number of student veterans into institutions of higher learning across the US.  The confusion that resulted from this influx of veterans, new to higher education and trying to navigate a complicated government program, highlighted the need for a full-time staff member dedicated to assisting them to succeed in achieving their academic goals.  Here at Granite State College we’ve embraced this concept by adding a Military Outreach and Support Specialist to our team.

In March 2013, Joe Hannon, a retired U.S. Army Sergeant First Class with twenty-two years of service and a 2012 graduate of GSC, came onboard.  The photograph to the left is Joe Hannon in front of oil wells in Kuwait that Saddam’s troops set on fire in March 1991.

The Military Outreach and Support Specialist is here to assist our military and veteran students with the many unique challenges they face while in pursuit of their degree and to assist our faculty and staff in working with them to ensure they receive the best education and student experience possible.

“We’ve already developed partnerships with several agencies in New Hampshire and surrounding areas that support and promote the success of our active duty, veterans, reserve, and National Guard.  We’ve also worked with faculty and staff members who have had questions or needed assistance with military or veteran related issues; from deciphering military acronyms to navigating several of the education benefit programs.”

Joe has been collaborating with faculty and staff to develop the Military Outreach Program with the goals of:

  • Serving as a professional resource to the GSC community regarding resources and strategies for working with student veterans.
  • Assessing and monitoring the needs of student veterans to recommend new initiatives, policies, and procedures at GSC.
  • Assisting in the supervision and support of VA work study program.
  • Participating in recruiting events, college fairs and other events to promote the visibility of Granite State College programs.
  • Serving as liaison with community and government partners.

Some of the services that we hope to initiate in the near future include; Staff and Faculty training on veteran’s issues such as Post Traumatic Stress and Traumatic Brain Injuries, an overview of VA benefits for Academic and Admissions Coaches, campus visits to meet with students and staff, and increasing our partnerships within the community in order to promote student success and well-being.

Joe is located at the Concord campus, Room 105, Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.  He welcomes advice and observations from all and is especially interested in hearing from any of our faculty and staff who have military experience and would like to share their insights.  If you are a faculty or staff with military experience we would like to hear from you.  Please email Joe at or contact him by phone at 603.513.1365.

Military Moments: We are compiling some photographs of our staff and faculty that served in the Military.  If you have a photograph that you would like to share, we would like to post them on a Military Moments page.  Please send your photographs to Joe noting the details of your military service and a description of the photograph.  We hope to hear from those of you that have served.

Here are a few photographs from our faculty that we have received so far.  Click on each of the thumbnails below, they will open and give you a description of that photograph.
