SOSC605 – Stress and the Family (Karin Allard)

Module 2 Overview: The Family as a System: A Contextual Model of Family Stress

Welcome to Module 2!

In this module, our focus is on Family Systems Theory, family roles and rules, dyads and triangulation, and genograms.

As we read through the material this week together, I’m reminded of a story told by Thomas S. Monson:

A young couple, Lisa and John, moved into a new neighborhood. One morning while they were eating breakfast, Lisa looked out the window and watched her next-door neighbor hanging out her wash.

“That laundry’s not clean!” Lisa exclaimed. “Our neighbor doesn’t know how to get clothes clean!”

John looked on but remained silent.

Every time her neighbor would hang her wash to dry, Lisa would make the same comments.

A few weeks later Lisa was surprised to glance out her window and see a nice, clean wash hanging in her neighbor’s yard. She said to her husband, “Look, John—she’s finally learned how to wash correctly! I wonder how she did it.”

John replied, “Well, dear, I have the answer for you. You’ll be interested to know that I got up early this morning and washed our windows!”

Enjoy Module 2!

Module 3 Overview: Classification of Stressor Events in Context

Welcome to Module 3!

In this module, our focus is on classification of stressor events, on ABC Stress Theory, and on stress in context.

All of the material you’ve read/reviewed/watched so far in the course can be taken into consideration as you complete this week’s assignment, the Stress Theory Paper.

I want to leave you with the following quote for this week. It’s from Dr. Viktor Frankl,a Psychiatrist imprisoned by the Nazis in the death camp at Auschwitz.

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of human freedoms to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” (Viktor Frankl)
